BIOACTIVE PEPTIDES HAVING INSECTICIDE ACTIVITY

 

Novel bioactive peptides for controlling fire ants (a Solenopsis spp.).  The peptides act as antagonists to a fire ant receptor for a pheromone biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide/pyrokinin (PBAN/pyrokinin) gene derived neuropeptide ligand. 

Potential Commercial Applications
- Environmentally friendly pesticides for controlling a Solenopsis spp.

NOVEL NYLANDERIA  FULVA VIRUS

At least one novel virus capable of infecting crazy ants (Nylanderia fulva), along with polynucleotide sequences and amino acid sequences of the virus. The virus is capable of be used as a biopesticide to control populations of crazy ants.

 

Potential Commercial Applications

- Potentially the virus could be utilized as a biopesticide or biological control agent to eliminate or at least reduce the spread of Nylanderia fulva and their colonies

- The virus could serve as a gene delivery system to study functional genomics in the ant

 

Competitive Advantages

 -This Nylanderia fulva virus is the first virus to be discovered from the invasive ant species N. fulva

PROCESSES TO PRODUCE UNPURIFIED POLYGALACTURONIC ACIDS FROM PLANT TISSUE

A process to produce polygalacturonic acids from pectin containing products such as citrus peels, apple juice, ciders and pomade, sugar beets, sunflower heads, mango peels and avocado peels.

Potential Commercial Applications
- Stabilizing drilling mud, fracking fluids and other industrial fluids
- Higher value alternative to citrus peel waste currently used as cattle fed

ANTI-CORROSION COATING UTILIZING BACTERIAL PRECIPATED EXOPOLYSACCHARIDES

 

A method for inhibiting corrosion on corrosion-sensitive metal with a bacterial exopolysaccharide. Specifically, exopolysaccharides precipitated from NRRL bacterial strains coated on low carbon steel alloy provide anti-corrosion coating to corrosion sensitive metals. The corrosion rate for coated metal is less than 0.4 milli-inch per year.

Potential Commercial Applications
- Preventive measures that will reduce or eliminate corrosion of metals

Competitive Advantages
- Bacterial exopolysaccharides are bio-based, environmentally benign, and cost comparative to existing anti-corrosion measures
- Exopolysaccharides are produced using readily available commercial fermentation processes

NANOPARTICLES AND FILMS COMPOSED OF WATER-INSOLUBLE

 

Nanoparticles and the process of producing them through the use of homogenization of water-insoluble compounds. The invention also includes films composed of the nanoparticles.

Potential Commercial Applications
- The nanoparticles could be used to entrap and release varying molecules, particularly those with hydrophilic character
- Potentially used to form films, coatings, and fibers that when combined with different polymers, makes other materials
- Potentially used to deliver medicine, in the automotive industry, for cosmetics and many other industries

- The nanoparticles are easy to produce and environmentally friendly

USE OF NITROGEN-CONTAINING COMPOUNDS AS PLASTICIZERS FOR PEPTIDE-BASED BIOPOLYMERS AND USES THEREOF

 

A method of reducing the melting point of a peptide-based biopolymer, such as keratin or silk, using a nitrogen-containing compound as a plasticizer.

Potential Commercial Applications:
- Produce animal feed to increase the adsorption of amino acids (for mammals, fish, birds, amphibians and reptiles)
- Produce fertilizer
- Produce substitutes for petroleum-based plastics

Competitive Advantages:
-The peptide-based processed biopolymers are malleable, digestible and biodegradable
-Using nitrogen-containing compounds as plasticizers lack the problems of using urea or petroleum-based plasticizers

NOVEL FERULATE ESTERASE ISOLATED FROM LACTOBACCILLUS FERMENTUM

 

The cDNA and amino acid sequences of a ferulate esterase obtained from Lactobacillus fermentum NRRL B-1932 is determined. An expression vector for expression of the ferulate esterase gene is generated. Recombinant bacteria producing ferulate esterases are generate. The recombinant ferulate esterase gene and transcribed protein contains a linker sequence and 6x HIS tag for purification. Enzymatic activity of the recombinant protein is determined.

Potential Commercial Applications:
- Ferulate esterase is a critical enzyme in hydrolyzing lignocellulosic biomass materials 
- Can be used in the production of ferulic acid which is used in foods and skin care products because of antioxidant properties
- The enzyme can be used for biomass degradation in various applications including fuels, animal feed, textile/ laundry, pulp, and paper industries

Competitive Advantages:
- Potential for mass production of purified and highly active ferulate esterase

METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING AQUACULTURE FEED

 

A method and system for producing a high-moisture, water-stable aquafeed.

Potential Commercial Applications
- Feed for slow feeding aquatic animals like shrimp, abalone, grazing species (rudderfish or Kysoids) and sturgeon
- Feed for traditional fish stock
- Specialty fish feeds including weaning diets, medicated feeds, brood feed and larval feeds

Competitive Advantages
- Texture similar to natural feeds such as sardines
- Significantly reduced amounts of total carbohydrates as compared to conventional feed
- Soft yet durable with high water stability and does not disintegrate upon soaking in water as quickly as traditional feeds do
-Contains over 45% moisture (before an optional post-production drying step)

PROCESS FOR ISOMERIZATION AND DECARBOXYLATION OF UNSATURATED ORGANIC COMPOUNDS WITH A METAL CATALYST OR CATALYST PRECURSOR

Agriculturally-derived fatty acids are directly converted into olefins, or other useful hydrocarbons. The process involves the use of a metal catalyst or catalyst precursor that facilitates the isomerization and/or decarboxylation of unsaturated carboxylic acids derivatives into olefins.

Potential Commercial Applications
Biobased:
- alkene for polymers such as linear low density Polyethylene:
- polyolefin plasticizer
- polyolefin lubricant

Competitive Advantages
- ~100% biobased content helps meet biobased formulation requirements
- Useful as a drop-in for replacement for commercial polymers without modification of existing process
