INTRAVITREAL INJECTION OF A CHIMERIC PHAGE ENDOLYSIN PLY187; PROTECTION FROM STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS ENDOPHTHALMITIS

A novel antimicrobial protein derived from a virus that infects bacteria has been tested and shown to reduce or eradicate staphylococcal bacteria infecting the eye ball in a mouse model of eye infection. The antimicrobial protein evaluated is Ply187AN-KSH3b, a chimeric phage endolysin derived from the Ply187 prophage. Intravitreal injection in C57BL/6 mouse eyes of chimeric Ply187AN-KSH3b (both at 6 and 12 h post infection) significantly improved the outcome of staphylococcal endophthalmitis, preserved retinal structural integrity, and maintained visual function. Phage lysin treatment significantly reduced the bacterial burden and the levels of inflammatory cytokines and neutrophil infiltration in the eyes.

Using directed evolution, several strains of Scheffersomyces stipitis are generated that better utilize xylose and glucose for improved ethanol production. These improved strains are obtained by culturing the yeast on hydrolyzates of differring concentrations of xylose, ethanol, and by-products.

An integrated set of sensors, microprocessor, and devices with software that remotely measures surface temperature and simultaneously acquires an image for the purposes of qualifying the sensed temperature. The system can be used to aide in precision irrigation management of center pivot or lateral move irrigation systems by providing surface temperature data for use in irrigation scheduling algorithms and automatic irrigation. The system can also be used in greenhouse environments and in drip irrigated fields to help monitor plant abiotic (drought, chemical) and biotic stresses (disease, insect infestation).

METHODS OF PRODUCING FOOD CONTAINERS WITH AN ANTIMICROBIAL COATING

Containers for fruits and vegetables with an antimicrobial coating containing TiO2 that kills microbes upon contact. Contamination of fresh fruits and vegetables often occurs when they are harvested, stored and distributed in containers that are repeatedly used. Microbes from decayed or damaged fruits and vegetables can be transferred to healthy fruits and vegetables via the containers. The bacterial-free containers are designed to address this issue.

Seed phytate is a repository of phosphorus and minerals in soybean seeds which most animals (non-ruminant) such as humans, swine and poultry, cannot efficiently or effectively digest. A novel soybean line containing two recessive mutations which produces viable seeds that contain surprising reductions in total seed phytate and significantly higher levels of inorganic phosphate compared to normal soybeans is generated.
