Water and Irrigation Efficiency through Science and Technology for the Middle East, April 29 - May 1, 2014
ARS staff attended the Water and Irrigation Efficiency, Science and Technology (WIEST) Seminar April 29 through May 1, 2014 at the Ambassador Hotel in Jerusalem. This seminar recognized the increasing competitiveness and cost structure of agricultural production by presenting appropriate technological solutions to improving water and nutrient use efficiencies while reducing groundwater pollution and increasing profitability. Ibrahim Shaqir, ARS-OIRP, Susan O'Shaughnessy, ARS, Bushland, TX , (Andrew McElrone ARS, Davis, CA, and Steve Evett ARS, Bushland participated and gave presentations. The 30 plus participants included water and irrigation experts, extension personnel and scientists from the West Bank, Jordan, Israel and the USA. Representatives of FAO and ICARDA also participated. The seminar was co-organized by water experts from El-Hawakeer, an Arab farmer organization in Israel, the Israeli Agricultural Research Organization (ARO), the Jordanian National Center for Agricultural Research and Extension (NCARE), and the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS).
