ARS Receives Cotton Seeds for Analysis from Uzbekistan
July 18, 2014. A USDA ARS Office of International Research Programs (OIRP) project funded under an agreement with the Department of State, and a collaborative effort with the ARS, Uzbekistan, and Texas A&M University, completed a material transfer agreement (MTA), and the ARS Genetics and Precision Agriculture Research Lab in Mississippi received cotton seeds from the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan. Considering challenging international technology transfer issues, the transfer was an exceptional achievement. Earlier this year, the research team published their findings in the Nature Communications Journal, showing the role of phytochromes in upland cotton fiber quality, using transgenic phytochrome-specific RNA interference (RNAi) to improve fiber length among other enhanced fiber quality traits, and also that these traits are heritable.
