Research Cooperation with Tajikistan on Functional Food Additives, November 2015 |
On October 1, 2015, the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) funded a new project between the Institute of Chemistry named after V.I. Nikitin, Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Botany, Plant Physiology and Genetics from the Republic of Tajikistan, and the ARS Eastern Regional Research Center (ERRC) in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania. The project explored using agricultural postharvest byproducts in Tajikistan, specifically, oligosaccharides (OS), found in apple pomace, sugar beet pulp, sunflower heads, grape cake, and ephemeroids plants. The aim was to construct "advanced healthy materials" (AHM) as either functional food ingredients, or as carriers of pharmaceuticals; and to examine their impact on the gut microbiome. This project continued cooperation under two ARS-Former Soviet Union Scientific Collaboration Program projects, funded by the Department of State Cooperative Threat Reduction Office through the ISTC from 2006 - 2014. |
