Bilateral Meetings on Agricultural Science and Technology Cooperative Programs with Taiwan
On Monday, April 21, 2014, USDA FAS hosted the annual Bilateral Meeting on Agricultural Science and Technology Cooperative Programs with Taiwan. ARS was represented by Ibrahim Shaqir and Marcella Witting, of the ARS Office of International Research Programs (OIRP). Representatives of ARS and the Taiwan Council on Agriculture, Department of Science and Technology, identified several areas of mutual interest for future cooperation, including nutrition, climate change, citrus greening, and controlling wild red rice. A follow-up meeting will take place via DVC in August. On Tuesday, April 22, 2014, ARS hosted the delegates from Taiwan for meetings and a campus tour in Beltsville. They met with senior Agency leaders and discussed ARS's processes for identifying research priorities, interacting with stakeholders, conducting peer review of project proposals, and monitoring and evaluating our research programs. They then met with ARS researchers at the ARS Crop Systems and Global Change Laboratory, where they discussed plans to collaborate on climate change and crop modeling, possibly beginning with scientists from Taiwan visiting the ARS lab.
