Seed Multiplication and Delivery of High-Yielding Rust Resistant Bread and Durum Wheat Varieties to Ethiopian Farmers Launched, February, 2015

Dr. Jose Costa and Ms. Eileen Herrera, ARS Office of National Programs, and Dr. Nora Lapitan, USAID Bureau of Food Security (under the ARS-USAID PASA) attended the first project meeting for the Ethiopia Wheat Rust Surveillance and Warning Component planned for February 18-24, 2015 at the ARS Cereal Disease Lab (CDL) in St. Paul, Minnesota. This meeting launched the rust surveillance and warning component of a larger USAID supported project, seed multiplication and delivery of high-yielding rust resistant bread and durum wheat varieties to Ethiopian Farmers." This component contributed to efforts to control and prevent the spread of highly pathogenic wheat stem rust by enhancing rust surveillance, early warning and phenotyping. The CDL and Stakman Borlaug Center for Sustainable Plant Health, University of Minnesota are organizing the meeting. Dr. Fentahun Mengistu, Director General, and Dr. Asnake Fikre, Crop Research Director of the Ethiopian Institute for Agricultural Research (EIAR), as well as participants from other Ethiopian research institutes, CIMMYT, Cornell University, and Washington State University attended.
