Q-Type Whitefly (B. tabaci) Genome Sequencing May Reduce Cassava Brown Streak Virus

Eileen Herrera, Deputy Director, ARS Office of International Research Programs (OIRP), travelled to Tanzania October 19 - 24, 2014 with Wayne Hunter, Entomologist, ARS Horticultural Research Lab, Kai Ling, Plant Pathologist, ARS Vegetable Research Lab, and Bill Wintermantel, Plant Pathologist, ARS Crop Improvement and Protection Research Unit. The group met with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture to develop a joint project between ARS and USAID to sequence the genome of Q-Type whitefly (B. tabaci). The work will be foundational to interventions to reduce Cassava Brown Streak virus. The project is funded by USAID in cooperation with ARS, and supports the i5K initiative objectives.
