ARS - Uzbek Cooperation Highlighted in UNESCO Report, November 2015

ARS - Uzbek Cooperation Highlighted in UNESCO Report: The "UNESCO Science Report Towards 2030" published in November 2015 included a half page highlight on the scientific cooperation between the Uzbek Center for Genomics and Bioinformatics, ARS and Texas A&M University on their RNAi research in cotton. As part of the section analyzing the state of Uzbek science, the report stated that the US - Uzbek "study could potentially have a multibillion-dollar impact on the global cotton industry and help cotton farmers fend off increasing competition from synthetic fibers." The article highlighted the cooperation including the 2014 article published in Nature Communications showing the role of phytochromes in upland cotton fiber quality, using transgenic phytochrome-specific RNA interference (RNAi) to improve fiber length among other enhanced fiber quality traits, and also that these traits are heritable; the report can be found on-line at http://en.unesco.org/unesco_science_report.
