ARS - South Korea New Food Safety Research Project, October 2015

The ARS Office of International Research Programs (OIRP) completed an agreement for a new project under the long-standing bilateral cooperative program with the Rural Development Administration (RDA) of the Republic of Korea. The project, entitled "Multifunctional real-time sensing platforms for food safety and security," will run for five-years for $750,000, and aims to reduce risks of foodborne illnesses. The cooperation will address food safety by advancing development of on-site sensing technologies to inspect fresh produce in high-throughput commercial processing operations. In addition, portable sensing units developed for contaminant detection in production and processing settings will be expanded to evaluate plant infections, stresses, and diseases to enhance yields for food security. RDA researchers will work with ARS scientists at the Environmental Microbial and Food Safety Laboratory (EMFSL) in Beltsville, MD. The ARS lab previously developed automated technology to detect and identify food contaminants using hyperspectral and other stationary or portable image-based devices.
