Joint Cooperation Between ARS and Uzbek Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics, January 2015

As a follow up to the Agriculture Working Group of the US - Uzbekistan Science and Technology Joint Committee Meeting held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in May 2014, ARS hosted six Uzbek scientists at two ARS labs in the area of plant biotechnology. Starting on January 20, the ARS Genetics and Precision Agricultural Research Unit (GPARU), Starkville, Mississippi welcomed two Uzbek scientists from the Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics for one month visits to continue joint studies initiated under their completed research project. They also helped to initialize experiments on cotton RNAi line evaluation that will be continued by new trainees from the Genomics Center. Drs. Johnie Jenkins and Sukumar Saha, GPARU, hosted a short visit from Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov, Center of Genomics and Bioinformatics Director, in mid-February. They discussed the on-going Starkville greenhouse studies on the Uzbek cotton seeds received in July 2014, and training plans for visiting Uzbek scientists. In late February, two additional Uzbek scientists began their six month training in Starkville and two others in Lubbock, Texas at the ARS Plant Stress and Germplasm Development Research Unit. They participated in key experiments at each location on the evaluation and in-depth-characterization of cotton RNAi lines as well as receive hands-on training on novel cutting-edge genomics and plant breeding technologies. This work enhanced Uzbekistan genomics research capacity and fostered the commercialization of RNAi technology.
