ARS and Embrapa (Brazil) Commission Evaluate State-of-the-Art of the Labex Program
From Dec 9th to 12th, 2013, Ibrahim Shaqir, ARS-OIRP Director, Dr. Marcio Porto and Dr. Celso Moretti , Head of the International Affairs Office and Head of the Research and Development Department, respectively, both from Embrapa in Brazil, led an analysis to assess the state-of-the-art of the bilateral scientific cooperation program, Labex US. The meetings were held in Beltsville, MD at GWCC and in Fort Pierce, FL at the US Horticultural Research Lab. All ARS and Embrapa researchers involved in the program were invited to discuss the current advances on six priorities areas of cooperation: genetic resources; animal health; drought tolerance; bioactive compounds from native fruit species; natural resources; and citrus Huanglongbing, on the control of the vector. Clear advances have been highlighted as the identification of new potential genes for drought tolerance in plants, gastro parasite tolerance in goats, new approaches for Citrus Huanglongbing vector control, improved methods for cryopreservation of plant and animal tissues, among others. New collaboration will be implemented on Preventive Breeding and, potentially, on trilateral research with Africa agricultural research institutions.
