Kenya Zoonotic Scoping 2013

Uganda and Kenya Scoping Missions for Zoonotic Diseases 2013

ARS-APP's Eileen Thacker and Cyril Gay each took part in a scoping mission to Uganda (Thacker) June 16 to 20, and Kenya (Gay) June 21 to 28, 2013, to conduct an efficient, targeted in-country needs assessment for building capacity to reduce biological threats posed by especially dangerous veterinary and zoonotic pathogens. The meetings identified potential areas where USDA and DOD could collaborate with Ugandan and Kenyan partners, and also helped secure support and engagement of local governments and international organizations. In addition to ARS, USDA agencies represented included: Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). USDA and its partners met with government representatives and in-country technical experts to jointly identify existing gaps in animal health systems' disease detection, diagnosis, vector control, surveillance and reporting capabilities, and identified opportunities for capacity building and collaboration locally and regionally.
