ARS Soil Scientist Jeff Herrick is Lead Author on Newly Released United Nations Report: "Unlocking the Sustainable Potential of Land Resources: evaluation systems, strategies and tools", June 17 2016

The United Nations Environment Programme - International Resource Panel (UNEP-IRP) report, "Unlocking the Sustainable Potential of Land Resources: evaluation systems, strategies and tools", was jointly released by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and UNEP-IRP in Beijing China on June 17, in conjunction with the World Day to Combat Desertification. Participating in the release ceremony, was lead author of the report, Dr. Jeff Herrick, Research Soil Scientist at ARS Range Management Research, Las Cruces, New Mexico. The IRP is a scientific panel launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in 2007 to build and share knowledge that will improve worldwide resources use by informing policymakers, industry and the community on improving local and global resource management to enhance sustainability and protect the environment.

The report is a primer on land evaluation to support sustainable increases in production for the 21st century. It updates the USDA pioneered strategy developed in response to the Dust Bowl. The report will be used as a background document to help explain the value of land evaluation systems like LandPKS for addressing a broad range of land management challenges. The USDA's Land Capability Classification system is highlighted in several places as one of two globally applied land evaluation systems, along with (related) US success in reducing soil erosion.
