ARS Bee Lab Entomologist Named 2014 Japanese Invitational Fellow

Jeff Pettis, Research Entomologist with the ARS Bee Research Lab in Beltsville Maryland has been named a 2014 Invitation Research Fellow by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science ( will study the possible effects of pesticides on honey bees in Japan for a five-week period from July 25 to September 1, 2014, and will be hosted by Kiyoshi KIMURA, Senior Researcher of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization in Japan. The joint project will strengthen collaborations between the US and Japan Departments of Agriculture, and improve our understanding of pollinator health and food production systems. This work dovetails the ARS Research Project "Managing Honey Bees Against Disease and Colony Stress" (1245-21000-277-00), objective 4, and will look at Identifying key impacts of in-hive and environmental pesticides on bee health.
