Dr. LinShu Liu, ARS Lead Scientist and Research Chemist Named a USDA Unsung Hero for his International Collaborative Efforts, May 2016 |
Dr. LinShu Liu of the ARS Dairy and Functional Foods Lab in Wyndmoor Pennsylvania, was recognized for his efforts in the Biosecurity Engagement Program (BEP), a State Department funded program, managed for ARS by the Office of International Research Programs (OIRP). Dr. Liu is being recognized for his accomplishment in successfully converting former Soviet weapon scientists to conduct research to improve the economics of Tajikistan, which provides important contributions to enhance the stability of Central Asia. Since 2005, Dr. Liu collaborated on research projects and successfully organized 11 former bioweapon scientists and 13 young scientists in Tajikistan. During the course of this involvement, Dr. Liu and his Tajik scientists together published 12 scientific papers and had 5 Patents issued on their scientific and technical advancements pectin from sunflower. As sunflower is a major economic crop in Tajikistan, this product brings significant economic value to food and pharmaceutical applications. This successful research led to the Tajik Government pledging an additional $1M to expand the research in 2012 and contributed to the promotion of Dr. Liu's Tajik counterpart as Director of the Chemistry Institute of Tajikistan Academy of Sciences in 2014. |
