Global African Swine Fever Alliance (GARA) Meeting in South Africa

Cyril Gay, ARS Animal Health National Program Leader, and Executive Secretary for the Global African Swine Fever Alliance (GARA) and the GARA Executive Board organized the 2014 GARA scientific meeting in Pretoria, South Africa November 10-14, 2014. The meeting, was hosted by the South African Agricultural Research Council (ARC). The meeting provided a forum for scientists and other stakeholders to follow up on the 2013 African Swine Fever (ASF) gap analysis meeting hosted at ARS Plum Island, and to discuss the latest advances in African Swine Fever (ASF) research, as well as identify priority focus areas going forward to achieve global ASF control. ARS researcher Manuel Borca from the ARS Foreign Animal Disease Research Unit, Plum Island attended and lead the vaccine research session of the conference. Melanie Peterson, ARS Office of International Research Programs (OIRP) organized State Department funding to support the participation of Ukrainian and Republic of Georgia scientists at the meeting.
