Dr. Douglas Gladue co-organized the high school event and advised students on their science projects.

The event was a multiagency (ARS, APHIS, DHS) project where nine school districts from New York and Connecticut were able to communicate in an open forum setting with posters and abstracts while engaging the top high school scientists to talk about their research, and to promote careers in scientific research. Hampton Bays High School Science Research students presented their scientific findings at the school’s fifth annual Science Research Symposium on April 17, 2019. Students spent as many as four years working on their research projects, ranging in topics from the tick-induced alpha-gal allergy, immune systems, malignant mesothelioma, influenza phylogenetics, coronary artery disease and acquired cognitive skills in lower vertebrates. Steve Pauszek presented his work on a series of recent Vesicular Stomatitis New Jersey Virus (VSNJV) outbreaks in the United States.
