Description of Research Interests:

Approximately 75% of loss in the trout industry is due to infectious disease. My research is focused on improving fish heath by modulating the intestinal immune system via oral administration of immune-stimulants, probiotics or immune-modulators.  These products may be used prior to disease onset or after disease occurrence in conjunction with antibiotic administration. Studies are underway to determine whether intestinal immune system modulation influences growth and fed conversion. We study and utilize genetic variation between fish families to develop breeding strategies that will select fish for increased responsiveness and thus reduced disease. Determining gut/environment interactions will lead to more effective ways of treating fish during disease outbreaks and identifying mucosal immunity mechanisms.
