June 4, 2010- Representative Marcy Kaptur Tours Greenhouses

As one of the points of interest on a local tour, Representative Marcy Kaptur stopped at the USDA-ARS greenhouse facilities at the University of Toledo's main campus and Toledo Botanical Gardens. Representative Kaptur stressed the importance of building strong relationships between members of the green industry with other community industries, in an effort to boost local economics and tourism. She demonstrated numerous successes in funding to the Toledo area for agricultural research, job development, and nature tourism, and is continuously working to secure more.

Representative Kaptur shares her vision for collaboration between Northwest Ohio industries and research organizations at USDA-ARS facilities at Toledo Botanical Gardens.

The visit to the USDA-ARS sites concluded with a short presentation by Dr. Jonathan Frantz that highlighted current research investigating the addition of silicon to fertilization regimes for improved plant growth and disease resistance in ornamental crops.  He also discussed a series of grower-collaborative trials being led by Dr. James Locke exploring the use of locally available organic amendments as substrate replacement for peat moss for a variety of flowering species.
