Originally from southern California, Sammy relocated to Peoria, Illinois in 2015 to work as a Biological Science Laboratory Technician in Steven W. Peterson’s lab in the Mycotoxin Prevention and Applied Microbiology Research unit at the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research. He received both his M.S. in Genetics, Genomics, & Bioinformatics and B.S. in Biological Sciences from the University of California Riverside. Sammy is responsible for processing fungal strains and carrying out multilocus sequence typing (MLST) to help identify novel and economically important fungal species for agricultural and industrial applications. He is also working on a project utilizing genomic and metabolomic approaches to help identify protective endophytes of corn that inhibit fungal pathogens and reduce mycotoxin contamination.
