AREAS OF EXPERTISE
Research focus is on sustainable and organic agriculture, soil conservation, nutrient cycling, water quality, and microbial and soil invertebrate ecology. Research addresses sustainable cropping systems; productivity and nutrient cycling in perennial systems; land use change for bioenergy production; and implications of biochar land application. Changes in soil health and quality are examined, requiring expertise in microbial and invertebrate indicators, and chemical nutrient indicators. Interactions among soil biota with implications for nutrient dynamics, including organic matter turnover and nutrient loss, are evaluated. Research contributes to development of sustainable land use systems by determining benefits of conservation management in cropping systems using cover crops, diverse crop rotations, reduced tillage, and animal manures.
