RELEASE OF CARROT INBREDS B2302 and B2566

The Agricultural Research Service, USDA, with the California and Florida
Agricultural Experiment Stations announce the release of two high quality
carrot inbreds to provide germplasm for developing improved genotypes and
producing proprietary hybrids.  One three-way experiment combination
[(B8O8OxB2302)xB2566] which involves these inbreds and is named SAVORY, has
been announced because of its performance during 2 years of trials in Florida,
California, and Wisconsin.  Line B8080, released in 1983, was supplied to
seedsmen who might wish to produce hybrid SAVORY.

B2566 was derived from a cross made in 1978 at the University of Wisconsin
between two lines, B9304, a Chantenay-type, medium orange, very mild-flavored,
and succulent, with B493, a highly inbred (Sll) dark orange, very
harsh-flavored Imperator type.  In the F2, made to establish a population
segregating flavor, two of 18 were mild, succulent, sweet, market type, and
uniformly orange color.  In the F3 selection was exercised for flavor,
texture, color and the cylindrical shape of Nantes.  A three-plant mass from
the better line in 1981 breeding plots produced seed for field row 2566 in
Florida and California.  Now at F3M5, B2566 is the result of four
cycles of recurrent selection for culinary quality, color, and root shape.
Roots of excellent flavor at 15-20 cm long, slightly tapered and moderately
blunt.  Tendency to multiple-tops and anthocyanin red crown color are overcome
in hybrid combinations.  In 1984 and 1985, the average total carotene was 100
to 120 ppm compared with 80 ppm in Imperator 58.

Inbred B2302, a dark orange (120 to 130 ppm total carotene) near-Nantes type
13-16 cm long with fair culinary quality originated from an inbred x inbred
cross made in 1976.  The two parents B4367 S3 and B68-27 S4 were extracted
from four cycles of mass selection starting with 8 Fl plants isolated under
screen in 1969.  The F2 from (B4367S3xB68-27S4) was advanced through 5
recurrent cycles.  A petaloid cytosterile, (B6439SxB68-27S4) was advanced
through 5 recurrent cycles.  A petaloid cytosterile, (B6439SxB6274M), caged
with plants of F2M1 in 1979 is now B2302S at BC5.  B2302M for
distribution is at F2M5.

Breeders seed of cytosterile B2302S, its maintainer B2302M and B2566M will be
pro-rated upon written requests before March 1, 1986 addressed to P. W. Simon,
USDA, ARS, Department of Horticulture, University of Wisconsin, Madison,
Wisconsin 53706.
