E-mail Lists Tell What's New for Kids at Science Web Sites

By Luis Pons
June 10, 2002

The Agricultural Research Service has now made it easy to know when something new is posted on the agency's popular web sites geared for kids. Kids and teachers can now sign up for e-mail alerts that arrive whenever a new story is posted at Science for Kids or its Spanish-language equivalent, Ciencia Para Niños.

The web sites are geared mainly for kids age 8 to 13 and are designed to nurture an interest in science by explaining, often in playful ways, how science affects everyday life and why it can make an interesting career.

The English and Spanish sites can help educators, as well as kids, on three levels: science, language and computer usage. For kids, it’s just plain fun. On the home page of each site, a landscape of familiar and odd images invite kids to explore stories about ARS scientific research on nutrition, plants, insects, animals and other topics. Each site offers more than 50 different fun-filled and informative stories and features.

In the center of the home page stands Dr. Watts, the guide who stands ready to answer questions kids have about agricultural research.

Science for Kids is on the Internet at /is/kids.
