ARS International Action- Mexico Babesia Meeting, March 2014
Mexico Meetings on Potential Babesia Research Collaborations
On March 3rd and 4th, 2014 in Cuernavaca, Mexico , Ms. Eileen Herrera, of the ARS Office of National Research Programs (OIRP), and Dr. Don Knowles, of the ARS Animal Disease Research Unit (ADRU), met with counterparts from the Mexican National Research Institution for Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock (INIFAP,) and the International Livestock Research (ILRI) from Nairobi, Kenya. Discussion focused on potential research collaborations to enhance diagnosis and control of Babesia, and control of the Boopholus tick vector. Potential collaborations include an epidemiological survey using serological and DNA detection for B. bovis and B. bigemina infection in tropical Mexican cattle, which could also be done in Babesia infected regions in West Africa, as well as development of a highly effective tick vaccine.
