METHODS

18 cultivated Western U.S. soils with a range
of chemical and physical properties (Table 1).
-
Three solutions of varying salt concentrations:
reverse osmosis water (RO), simulated irrigation water (IRR), and 0.01
M CaCl2.

Four solution:soil ratios covering the range
of suspended sediment concentrations in irrigation water (200:1 to 2000:1).

Solutions rotated in plexiglass drums (24
cm by 19.5 cm diameter) at 12 rpm and 20 degrees C (Figure 1-B).

Solutions sampled at intervals up to 4 hours,
filtered through 0.2 µm membrane filters and analyzed for molybdate-reactive
P (RP).
