In 1998-99 there were 1.75 million tonnes of cereal hay produced in
Australia at yield of 4 tonnes DM/ha average. During that period,
over 400,000 tonnes of cereal hay was exported, mostly to Japan (most of
this being oaten hay, plants in vegetative to soft dough stage ).
Japan is a growing market for Australian exports, particularly for their
dairy industry. Domestic prices for oaten hay range from A$70-165
(U.S.$40 -100) depending mostly on time of year, being higher in
winter when demand is high. Quality also affects price, but
economic information is not available.
