The Delta Human Nutrition Research Program in Stoneville, Mississippi is strategically located in the Lower Mississippi Delta region of the United States. This largely rural region suffers from some of the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in the nation. This mission is accomplished through the use of advanced and innovative epidemiologic and statistical methods to analyze nationally representative as well as regional dietary datasets. Further, the program strives to improve the health and well-being of Lower Mississippi Delta residents through collaborative intervention efforts aimed at improving diet quality and increasing physical activity. The goal of this program is to establish multidisciplinary, cross-institutional research teams which can determine and subsequently address dietary factors related to obesity and chronic diseases in health-disparate regions of the United States, such as the Lower Mississippi Delta.
