Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A field study was initiated in 1997 in Urbana, Illinois to determine if there was an interaction between soybean cyst nematode (SCN) and soybeans treated with preemerge and postemerge herbicides. A split-block design was used, with cultivars as the main plot and herbicides as the subplot. Four cultivars were resistant to SCN and two cultivars were susceptible. The six herbicide treatments included a hand-weeded control, Prowl, Frontier+Sencor, Pursuit, Blazer, and a sixth treatment where Roundup was sprayed on the Roundup Ready cultivar, Synchrony was sprayed on the STS cultivars, and Galaxy was sprayed on the conventional varieties. Main effects, cultivars and herbicides, were significant for plant populations, plant growth, yield, and SCN population. Galaxy, Blazer, and Pursuit caused foliar injury on all cultivars, but did not affect SCN populations. The highest SCN populations were from SCN susceptible cultivars treated with Frontier+Sencor. The application of Prowl was associated with severe lodging and yield reduction for all SCN resistant cultivars, but did not affect SCN populations.
