Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The purpose of this study was to compare estimates of daily energy expenditure from self-reported 3-day diet records (EI), energy expenditure measured by doubly labeled water (TEE), physical activity recall (PA) and resting energy expenditure (REE) in an elderly rural population (MEAN age 73.6 ñ 4.0). Twenty-eight elderly male (15) and female (14) subjects were recruited from a rural Pennsylvania population. EI (7.86 ñ 1.89 MJ) was 29% less than TEE (11.04 ñ 2.05 MJ), 28% less than PA (10.83 ñ 2.95 MJ) and 23% greater than REE (6.02 ñ 1.12 MJ). TEE and PA were not significantly different. TEE, PA and REE were greater in men than women but TEE, PA and REE/fat-free mass were not different. EI and percent difference between EI and TEE were not different between men and women. While PA predicted TEE reasonably well, self-reported diet records consistently underestimated TEE measured by doubly labeled water in a rural elderly population.
