Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Several isolates of subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J were obtained from meat-type chickens experiencing myeloid leukosis at various ages. These isolates were arbitrarily placed into three groups according to age of the flocks at the onset of the disease, namely group 1, 6 weeks or less; group 2, 9 to 14 weeks; and group 3, 20 weeks or older. In this study, White Rock chickens were either inoculated or contact-exposed to an ALV-J isolate of group 1 termed ADOL-6827 at hatch. At 3 weeks of age, viremia was detected in 100% of inoculated chickens; by 8 weeks of age, 88% and of inoculated and 28% of contact-exposed chickens, respectively tested positive for ALV-J. ALV-J induced tumors were detected in inoculated, but not in contact-exposed chickens, and the earliest tumors were noted at 12 weeks of age.
