Technical Abstract: The physical properties of a number of selected adjuvants and surfactants were measured at spray mix concentrations and their effects on various stages in the application of pesticides are described. Data are presented showing the effect of dynamic surface tension on spray droplet size from a range of flat fan spray nozzles, on monosize droplet reflection from wheat leaves, and on pesticide retention. The measured efficacy of sprayed imazethapyr herbicide was influenced by adjuvants, but was not primarily related to the measured retention. The uptake of herbicide was therefore concluded to be dependent on other specific chemical properties of the adjuvant.
