Technical Abstract: Acute porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS), Acute PRRS, is the consensus name for an apparently new clinical syndrome of swine that was recognized for the first time in 1996. The name reflects a spectrum of clinical signs that are similar to, but more severe than, those previously associated with PRRS (abortions, stillborn pigs, weak pigs, respiratory disease), a disease that was first recognized in the late 1980s and has since become one of the most significant diseases affecting the swine industry today. This paper summarizes four studies conducted by investigators at the NADC and in collaboration with scientists at Iowa State University. Preliminary results from these experiments suggest that Acute PRRS may be caused by PRRS virus and that it is a more severe form of PRRS as opposed to a new and distinct disease caused by another agent. However, only a small number of clinical cases have been investigated and it is possible that another agent is responsible for the severe disease known as Acute PRRS or the hypothetical agent forms a synergistic interaction with PRRS virus resulting in a severe disease that is referred to as Acute PRRS.
