Technical Abstract: This review about triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) focuses on the present and future, in terms of agronomic potential, and in terms of predicting future product utilization. The latter does not come with guarantees, but rather with a level of prediction which can be logically reasoned on the basis of product utilization and/or economic rationalization. Triticale is a global crop whose future is guaranteed, since, as a crop, it is environmentally more flexible than the other small grain cereals; it shows better tolerance to many diseases and pests than its parental species or distant relatives; it is capable of meeting human food needs; and it is capable of realizing much higher yields and biomass than other small grain cereals. The significant increase in triticale production, especially in the developed world, is testimony to its future; therefore, the most critical needs of this review focus on product enhancement and utilization, especially with reference to human food needs.
