Technical Abstract: Addition of insoluble and soluble organic C to soil through management practices, such as sewage sludge application, may greatly alter pesticide sorption-desorption in soil, which in turn would affect movement. In this work, batch equilibrium techniques were used to determine the effects of four sewage sludges and their water dissolved organic matter on the sorption-desorption of atrazine by a silt loam soil. Sludge addition to soil increased atrazine sorption, although the effectiveness of the mixtures to sorb atrazine was lower than expected from the sorption on the isolated soil and sludges. The effect of the dissolved organic matter extracted from the different sludges on atrazine sorption-desorption varied with the specific characteristics of the sewage sludge. A low association between the dissolved organic matter and atrazine was measured in solution by dialysis technique. Interactions of soil surfaces with organic C from the sludges were a major process determining atrazine sorption-desorption in amended soil.
