Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Modification was made to the Ergun (M-E) equation to account for flow resistance of plant roots in submerged flow rock beds. Measured hydraulic data using two rock diameters in flumes 7.62 m x 0.46 m x 0.31 m were compared to predictions using the Ergun and M-E equations with plants. Differences in vertical root distribution resulted in two district root profiles, with the upper portion of the bed having a greater porosity reduction. The Ergun equation greatly underestimated head loss for both the upper and lower portions of the bed with plants. The M-E equation modeled closely the measured head loss for the smaller rock diameter but slightly underestimated head loss for the upper portion of the bed for the larger rock diameter with plants.
