Technical Abstract: Maize Genome Database, MaizeDB, http://www.agron.missouri.edu, gives Internet users powerful access to information about the genome and biology of maize, with (1) dynamic extraction of data via World Wide Web; (2) on-line data entry, with fidelity checking, by on- and off-site scientist-curators; and (3) various routes for accessing the data electronically: World Wide Web (WWW), gopher, ACEDB and ad hoc SQL. Also supported at Columbia is guest Internet login by modem to all routes, not requiring WWW or gopher software. WWW access modes include (1) 4 styles of precision query forms, including one that provides user-specified subsets of Mapmaker formatted data and (2) full text query; (3) browser access to special lists, computed regularly and which dynamically extract data from MaizeDB. These latter include map-indexed lists of genes, probes, microsatellite primers, genetic stocks, mutant images; cooperators; current literature; and new data. The Maize Genetics Newsletter (MNL), years 1994-current, is newly on-line, linked to MaizeDB authors and other objects. Links to new external databases were made: MedLine (1921 links), EcoCyc(298), AGIS-EC#(297); these provide access to published abstracts and to metabolic pathway data. MaizeDB provides a gateway for seamless retrieval of specific records from other databases; currently 13,582 records in MaizeDB have 62,783 links to 41 external databases, more than double last years' numbers for these three categories. Conversely, SwissProt (Switzerland), Entrez(GenBank), and GRIN link back to MaizeDB for genomic information. Worldwide users now access the Columbia site directly at a rate of 185,000 accesses/month, more than double last year's statistics.
