Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: MaizeDB (http://www.agron.missouri.edu) currently describes 229 loci where a Plant-Wide Gene Name, selected or adapted from Gene Mendel has been assigned. Currently there are some 1996 loci described, where sequence information is available but no Plant-Wide Name assigned. This gap may be anticipated to widen enormously if a public corn genome initiative is funded and presumably the gap already exists for rice and Arabidopsis, where there has been extensive sequencing. The importance of a consensus nomenclature for inter- and intra-species mapping will be discussed.
