It is distributed worldwide and has been found in virtually all carnivorous and omnivorous animals. Under current methods of swine production, which emphasize good sanitary practices, Trichinella has virtually disappeared from the domestic pig in many countries. However, this parasite remains a problem where pigs are raised outdoors and are exposed to rodents and wildlife. Trichinella remains a common parasite in many game species and therefore poses a human health risk to hunters and others who do not prepare game meats properly to avoid infection. |
