Interpretive Summary: The National Small Grains Collection, a large genebank or seedbank of the small grain crops, stores almost 46,000 different samples of wheat from around the world. A large amount of data is available on these samples, including how they react to disease and insect problems. This paper describes a strategy for selecting the right materials from this large number of samples for use by plant breeders in developing new varieties.

Technical Abstract: The National Small Grains Collection (NSGC) maintains a working collection of 46,000 Triticum accessions. Nearly one million desciptor data records for wheat are available on the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN). Descriptor data for reactions to eight disease and insect pests of wheat were analyzed. Key countries and regions of the world where resistance sources are found were identified based on the accession improvement status. This information can be utilized by the curator and requesting scientists in identifying diverse wheat germplasm for research and breeding.
