Interpretive Summary: The introduction of molecular markers in the last ten years has provided the opportunity to identify individual genes which affect traits of economic interest to agricultural communities. Upon identification of such genes, variation within and between breeds can be exploited to increase the rate of genetic improvement in cattle, as well as other important species. This article briefly discusses the technical aspects of genetic markers, and broadens the discussion into the potential application of genetic markers both on the ranch and in the laboratory.
