Title: Fusarium Head Blight Resistance and Mycotoxin Deoxynivalent Tolerance in Several Spring Wheats

Technical Abstract: Wheat genotypes were studied to determine if they differed for kernel weight when treated with the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON). DON is one possible cause of kernel weight losses induced by Fusarium head blight (FHB). We also wished to determine the relationship of DON tolerance measured by kernel weight losses with resistance to disease spread in spike e(type II resistance). Eleven spring wheat genotypes with a wide range of type II resistance were used. At anthesis, main tillers were injected with concentration of 0.1 mg DON dissolved in 1 ml 5% methanol solution through the culm 10 cm below the spikes (app. 0.5 ml/spike). Controls (non- injected and injected with 5% methanol) were included. Losses in average dry kernel weight (ADKW) were determined at full maturity. ADKW was significantly low for the DON-injected treatment. No differences in ADKW were found between the non-injected and 5% methanol injected controls. This suggests that DON affected kernel-fill. The losses in ADKW (P < 0.05 among cultivars ranged from 0 (Frontana) to 17% (Norm), indicating that genotypes differed in levels of DON tolerance. Correlation between ADKW losses and type II resistance was low (r=0.41). No clear relationships between DON tolerance measured by ADKW losses and the type II resistance among genotypes were found. Genetic control of each type of mechanism may be different.
