Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Bluetongue virus (BTV) is important to US animal industry because of the disease it causes in ruminant animals and because of BTV related trade restrictions. These viruses are transmitted by a biting gnat or midge. An insect cell line was developed to study the replication of these viruses in its insect host cells. This study describes a persistent but non-infectious to mammalian cells bluetongue virus variant.
