Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Marek's disease is an evolving pathogen that has gained appreciable virulence during the past 40 years. This virulence increase coincides with the use of a succession of increasingly effective vaccines. This review discusses the rationale for further improvements in vaccines and the difficulties to be encountered in this search. Roles industry plays in the econtrol of Marek's disease are emphasized and a strategy is outlined which involves genetic resistance and good management as equal partners with vaccination to provide optimum long term control.
