Technical Abstract: Sorption-desorption are two main processes influencing the fate of organic chemicals in the soil-water biosystem. The batch/slurry (B/S) technique is extensively used for studies of sorption from solution by solid phase sorbents, and for studies of desorption to solution of sorbate materials from solid phase sorbents. In water-based systems, equilibrium dialysis (ED), continuous flow stirred cell (CFSC), and gel chromato-graphy (GC) procedures can provide appropriate methods for calculating sorption isotherms. Desorption isotherms can be obtained by the B/S and the continuous flow-flow injection analysis (CF-FIA) methods. Information about the mechanisms of sorption can be derived from isotherm analysis data. Applications of the Langmuir equation, and of derivatives thereof to data for sorption from solution provide relatively simple procedures for analyses of the possible sorption mechanisms involved.
