Technical Abstract: The level of horizontal transmission of Salmonella cholerasuis (SC) in weaned pigs was measured. Thirty, fourteen-day-old weaned pigs were divided into three groups of ten and each pig orally challenged with either 10**4, 10**6, or 10**8 SC and identified as seeder pigs. Twenty four hr later each group was co-mingled with 10 salmonellae-free, fourteen-day-old weaned pigs and identified as contacts (50:50 seeder to contact ratio). Seven days later all pigs were killed and cecal contents (CC) and ileal cecal lymph nodes (ICLN) were cultured for the presence of SC. No SC was cultured from the CC or ICLN of the contact pigs in the 10**4 or 10**6 challenged groups. In the 10**8 SC group 30% of contact pigs were positive for SC in CC and ICLN. Results suggest that horizontal transmission of SC occurs at levels above 10**6.
