Technical Abstract: This chapter provides a thorough description of the post harvest processes required for cotton quality preservation in the United States from seed cotton storage to market classification. Specifically, aspects such as seed cotton storage, cottonseed storage, air pollution, and energy conservation, as well as seed cotton cleaning, drying, ginning, lint cleaning, and packaging are described. Specific emphasis is placed on machine functions, operating characteristics, and fiber quality. Recommended gin machinery sequences and preferred ginning procedures to enhance processing efficiency, quality control and monetary returns are also addressed.
