Technical Abstract: This is a review of the book on proceedings of a 1994 workshop held in Kappel a. Albis, Switzerland attended by over 65 European scientists involved in research on powdery mildew and rust diseases of small grain crops. The review briefly describes contributions presented at the workshop in the areas of pathogen virulence, host resistance, use of cultivar and crop mixtures to impede disease increase, pathogen population genetics, host and pathogen molecular genetics, and dynamics of fungicide resistance in pathogen populations. Greatest emphasis at the workshop was on powdery mildew of barley. A comprehensive data base has been developed on changes in distribution and frequency of pathogenic races of barley powdery mildew throughout Europe. This has facilitated research on the effects of wind dissemination of the pathogen and the impact of resistant barley cultivars and fungicide use on genetic structure of pathogen populations on a continental scale. An important feature of the workshop was the integration of research in Western Europe and Eastern Europe in recent years.
