Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Within the genome of higher organisms, the DNA contains regions with two or more of the four bases repeated. The length of the repeat at each location in the genome is highly variable within and between individuals. These regions, referred to as microsatellites, provide most of the basic units used for marker-based genetic linkage maps. The difference in repeat tlength is detected by the polymerase chain reaction which requires that small oligonucleotide primers be designed so that they are complimentary to DNA on both sides of the microsatellite. Presently we are describing 109 primer pair sequences for bovine microsatellites. We have also indicated the results from testing these on sheep DNA. These primers will be marker loci in the bovine (and sheep) linkage map.
