Interpretive Summary: Mycotoxins are toxic chemicals produced by molds which are present on many foods and feeds. Typically multiple mycotoxins can simultaneously occur on grains and other commodities. The actual number of mycotoxins is unknown, however, it has been estimated that there are between 20,000 and 300,000 unique mycotoxins. Currently, only about 300-500 mycotoxins have been characterized. Given the potentially large number of mycotoxins to which animals and humans might be exposed, it is logistically impossible to test all possible combinations of mycotoxins. It is proposed that understanding how mycotoxins alter the function of normal chemical processes in cells, will allow scientists to predict which mycotoxins and which combinations of mycotoxins will present the greatest probability of causing injury to animals and humans. This will allow scientists to rationally prioritize the study of new mycotoxins and combination of mycotoxins.
